How it stands out

The Story

Purple was started by two brothers who were inventors (they created Foam). They started a Kickstarter campaign in 2015 for the bed. In five days it reached its goal of $25,000. By the end of the campaign it had 320 backers and they raised over $170,000.

Awards and Recognition

  • Most funded Kickstarter campaign in the state of Utah
  • No. 3 out of 100 companies in the MountainWest Capital Network Utah 100
  • No. 12 of Utah Business' Fast 50
  • Over 50 million views on its viral Raw Egg Test YouTube video

Construction

Purple has two different models: The Original Purple and The New Purple Mattress. Both Purple mattresses use their patented Smart Comfort Grid for pressure relief and  support.

The Original Purple Mattress Layers

This mattress is 9.5 inches inches tall. Foam layers are CertiPUR-US approved.

Cover: Knit Fabric with 30% Viscose, 65% Polyester, 5% Lycra.

Layer One: 2" of hyper-elastic polymer for pressure relief.

Layer Two: 3.5" of polyurethane foam to provide deep compression support.

Layer Three: 4" of polyurethane foam as a foundation for the bed.

The New Purple Mattress Layers

This mattress allows you to choose how thick you want it to be, ranging from 11 inches to 13 inches.

Cover: Knit fabric of 98% polyester and 2% spandex.

Comfort Layer: You can add 2", 3", or 4" of the Smart Comfort Grid. This stretchy material is what makes their bed stand out. Depending on how many inches you add, the name of the mattress changes to the Purple 2, Purple 3, or Purple 4.

Transition Layer: This thin layer of polyurethane foam separates the comfort layer from the pocketed spring system below it.

Support Layer: 7.5" of responsive coils that are individually wrapped.

Firmness

Both mattresses are described as medium firm. We rated each firmness on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the firmest.

The Original Purple is slightly firmer. It has a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale.

The New Purple is slightly less firm due to its coils that give it a little extra bounce. It has a 6 rating on the firmness scale.

Motion Transfer

This factor is especially important to couples who may have a partner who tosses and turns a lot.

The Original Purple mattress seems to do pretty well to remain still and also stays pretty quiet. The New Purple Mattress might be slightly louder due to the coils in the bed.

Trial Period

Since this mattress is only available online, it is important to know about their policy. The Purple beds have a 100 Night Trial. As long as the bed is clean and undamaged you can return it for a full refund.

However, if you order a second bed to try out another model, the return policy changes and it is seen as an exchange. You do not get another 100 night trial on your second bed. After the return process is completed for your original mattress purchase, you will receive a full refund on that mattress.

Warranty

If your bed is defective (for example, it sinks in), then Purple will replace for free during the 10 year warranty. Beds are covered by warranty only if they are used on a firm, flat, solid-surface, non-spring foundation (whether non-moving type or adjustable type) sufficiently strong to remain flat and firm under the weight of the mattress and its users, from the date of delivery onward to the date of the warranty claim without interruption, otherwise the warranty is void.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • If you are not a fan of memory foam beds, the materials will give a unique feel with decent pressure relief
  • The Original Purple is known to remain quiet if you have a loud partner that tosses and turns
  • Does not sleep particularly hot

Cons

  • Some complaints about edge support (for example, if you sit on the edge of the bed or your partner drives you to the edge in the middle of the night)
  • Some customers have worried about the powder in the beds, but this is simply used to eliminate noise and Purple has deemed it safe
  • The New Purple beds can be pretty pricy. The Purple 4 bed starts at $2,499 for Twin XL and goes up to $3,499
  • Better Business Bureau rating of F

Conclusion

The Purple mattress offers good pressure relief with its Hyper-Elastic Polymer material. It is a quiet bed so if you or your partner toss and turn a lot, it won't make too much noise. The newer beds can be pricy if you add extra layers, but you can either choose financing or opt for their original bed for more affordability.
